Saint Benedict Ring Meaning: The Father of Monks and Protector Against Evil

Saint Benedict of Nursia is one of the most loved saints of the Catholic Church. Known as the father of Western monasticism and a powerful protector against evil, he is a popular choice for men who want to wear their faith every day. Here is what a Saint Benedict ring represents.

Who was Saint Benedict?

Benedict was born in Nursia, Italy, around the year 480. After studying in Rome he left city life to live as a hermit, and later founded monasteries, including the famous abbey of Monte Cassino. His guide for monastic life, the Rule of Saint Benedict, is built on prayer, work and humility, summed up in the motto ora et labora, "pray and work". In 1964 Pope Paul VI named him a patron saint of Europe. His feast day is celebrated on 11 July.

Why is Saint Benedict a protector against evil?

Stories from his life describe Benedict overcoming temptation and surviving attempts to poison him by making the sign of the cross. Because of this, he has long been invoked for protection against evil, temptation and danger. The well-known Saint Benedict medal carries prayers of exorcism, and many families keep it at home or in the car.

The symbolism on a Saint Benedict ring

  • The hooded habit shows his life as a humble monk.
  • The crozier, the shepherd's staff, marks him as an abbot who guides his community.
  • The book represents the Holy Rule he wrote.

Our Saint Benedict signet ring shows the saint in his habit with his crozier and the Rule, carved in deep relief on a classic oval face.

Who wears a Saint Benedict ring?

It is a meaningful gift for confirmation, for a godfather, for a man entering religious life, or simply for anyone who wants a daily reminder of discipline, prayer and protection.

Choosing your ring

An oxidized finish brings out the folds of the habit and the details of the face. Polished silver, gold and rose gold finishes give a brighter look. Discover more patron saints in our Catholic rings and saint rings collections, or read about the meaning of the Saint Michael ring.
