How to Choose a Men's Signet Ring: Finger, Size and Style Guide
The signet ring is one of the oldest pieces of men's jewelry. Originally pressed into hot wax to seal letters, it later became a symbol of family, faith and identity. Today a signet ring is a simple way to wear something meaningful every day. This guide covers the questions we are asked most often.
Which finger do you wear a signet ring on?
Traditionally, signet rings are worn on the little finger (pinky) of the non-dominant hand, a custom that is especially common in Britain and Europe. In the United States many men also wear them on the ring finger. There is no strict rule: choose the finger where the ring feels comfortable and is protected from daily knocks.
How to find your ring size
- Measure a ring that already fits the same finger, or get sized at a local jeweler.
- Measure at the end of the day, when fingers are slightly larger.
- Signet rings with a wide face or band sit tighter. If you are between sizes, choose the larger one.
All our rings are made to order in US sizes 5 to 16, including half sizes.
Choosing a face shape
- Oval: the classic signet shape, ideal for portraits such as saints and gods. See our Saint Michael signet ring.
- Octagon: a stronger, more architectural look, used in our zodiac signet rings.
- Round and coin style: inspired by ancient coins, like our Medusa coin ring.
Choosing a design that means something
A signet ring is personal. Many men choose a patron saint, a symbol of their heritage, a zodiac sign, a spirit animal or a masonic emblem. Browse our men's signet rings by theme to find the story you want to wear.
Sterling silver finishes explained
- Oxidized: darkened recesses that make deep relief designs stand out, with a vintage character.
- Polished silver: bright and clean.
- Gold or rose gold finish: a warm tone over solid 925 sterling silver.
Looking after your signet ring
Take your ring off for swimming, the gym and cleaning products, wipe it with a soft cloth, and store it dry. A well-made sterling silver signet ring can be worn for decades and passed down.
